Atlassian, the leading provider of collaboration software for product teams, today announced Bamboo 4, the newest release of its continuous integration and delivery server. Bamboo 4 enables software developers to automatically test code on development branches before merging with the main code line. It provides automatic plan branching and merging for distributed version control systems (DVCS) like Git and Mercurial as well as push-button plan branching for traditional version control systems (VCS), like Subversion, Perforce and CVS, so developers can easily and quickly integrate changes no matter which branch contains the new code.

"Every version control system, whether it's centralized or distributed, brings advantages to the developer but also workflow challenges. Bamboo 4 bakes in the best practices in workflow to make the continuous integration process more streamlined without having to know all the details," said Jean-Michel Lemieux, vice president of engineering at Atlassian. "Bamboo gives software developers the best of both worlds – feature branching and continuous integration – and works the way developers work."
Bamboo provides the continuous integration, continuous deployment and release management capabilities for large and small software development teams in such organizations as General Electric, NASA, Stanford University, Verizon and Mercedes-Benz.
Plan Branches: Hassle-Free Way to Integrate Changes
The latest release of Bamboo offers a flexible continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment environment for agile software development teams that adopt either DVCS or centralized version control workflows. Bamboo 4 offers Plan Branches that work for both environments. Developers can easily reuse the same build configuration across many, many branches. DVCS encourages a practice called branching, which makes a copy of the source code at a certain point in time and allows developers to briefly work in isolation on their branch before merging their changes back into mainline development. Bamboo’s advanced support for DVCS automatically detects new branches as they are created, tests the changes, and can even merge the branches into mainline development.
For VCS, developers can easily add a Plan Branch to the Plan, manually. Once done, Bamboo will test that branch.
Easier Testing with Test Quarantine; Clutter-Free UI for Faster CI
Bamboo's new Test Quarantine feature is a point-click process that allows system administrators to isolate a broken test so that it can be re-visited at a later time and not affect the outcome of the build. Once quarantined tests are revamped, developers can re-introduce them with a single click. Bamboo 4 provides the count of Quarantined Tests in every build as a reminder to reincorporate them.
To help developers work more quickly, Bamboo 4 offers an efficient user experience through user interface improvements. Developers can now provide rapid feedback on build failures by navigating builds faster, browsing plans with ease and identifying build failures quickly.
Availability
Bamboo 4 has deep integration with Atlassian products such as JIRA, the industry-leading issue tracking software, Fisheye, a source code browser, and HipChat, as well as third-party plugins. Bamboo 4 is available for a free 30-day trial or can be purchased for on-site download for as little as $10.
