Leading IT Organizations Do More with Less by Taking a New Approach to Application Performance Management

dynaTrace software, the innovator and emerging leader in application performance management (APM), announced the immediate availability of a major new release of its third-generation continuous APM system. This new release is enabling proactive, innovative IT organizations like those at Peopleclick, AutoTrader.com, Deutsche Bahn and IntraLinks to simultaneously improve the performance of their business-critical applications while delivering new operational efficiencies.

With this release dynaTrace extends its industry-leading PurePath technology delivering 24x7 transaction-level visibility further into environments that rely on virtualization, SOA and custom remoting protocols.

Real Customers. Real Success: dynaTrace Customers Speak

“We’ve used dynaTrace in our production environment for over a year now, and it’s really accelerated our problem resolution process,” said Dave Anderson, Principal Architect, Peopleclick. “With this new release, we’re looking forward to the new virtualization metrics in the PurePath that will allow us to immediately see whether the problem is in the application itself or in the virtualization layer, further speeding problem resolution.”

This new version of dynaTrace also automates away repetitive tasks in pre-production, enabling architects, test and development teams to increase proactive isolation and elimination of application problems. New RESTful interfaces not only enable automation of repetitive tasks such as regression analyses and complex architectural validations, but also allow existing tools to automatically run reports and export data from the dynaTrace system.

“Our business depends on the reliability of our applications, and maintaining our high standards of quality is essential,” said AutoTrader.com’s Sr. Director for IT Operations and Services Cliff Goolsby. “dynaTrace’s new automation features will free our top technicians from repetitive manual tasks needed to maintain and enhance application quality, and let them focus more on creating features and functionality to even better engage our users.”

“We’ve been using the dynaTrace solution for more than three years on several applications in production,” said Dirk Hessenmüller, IT Operations Architect at Deutsche Bahn. “IT automation and virtualisation are key initiatives for us, and we look forward to leveraging these new features in dynaTrace 3.1”.

dynaTrace’s latest release further enhances the company’s unique Continuous APM lifecycle-based approach with advanced session- and incident-management features designed to reduce operational maintenance and facilitate lifecycle collaboration.

“As IntraLinks continues to expand technologically, as well as geographically, we’re working hard to develop high performing, scalable features and functionalities that our users can depend on,” said John Landy, Chief Technology Officer of IntraLinks. "Since dynaTrace designed its APM system for everyone — from production teams to testers and developers to architects — it will afford our team deeper visibility into production application behavior and enable us to quickly repair issues. The end result is an ever faster, smarter platform for our worldwide clients to securely exchange critical information outside of their respective firewalls.”

New dynaTrace Capabilities Deliver On Key Requirements of 3rd Generation APM

The latest release from dynaTrace software delivers against the 5 key requirements of a third-generation application performance management system:

1. Transaction-centric: Effective APM today requires transaction-level performance visibility rather than traditional APM product’s aggregated component-level monitoring. This dynaTrace release extends transactional visibility to:

  • Virtualization: understand virtualization’s impact on business-critical application performance by seeing how competition for shared resources impacts transaction response times
  • ESBs: manage the interdependencies of SOA applications that decouple services through an enterprise service bus and understand their impact on the end-to-end transaction performance
  • Custom Protocols: A new software development kit (SDK) enables dynaTrace to trace transactions relying on non-standard remoting protocols

2. Continuous, 24x7: dynaTrace’s transaction-centric APM system runs continuously, even in high volume, complex production environments to proactively spot performance issues before users are broadly impacted. This new release contains improvements in:

  • Scalability: dynaTrace now processes 75% more measurements per second per dynaTrace server to accommodate the largest production environments
  • Performance: 100% improvement in optimizing and analyzing memory dumps
  • Optimization: 30% reduction in the size of the dynaTrace repository

3. Lifecycle: Unlike traditional APM systems deployed primarily in production environments, third generation APM is used across the application lifecycle starting in development, extending into test centers, and through to production. The latest dynaTrace release delivers new features designed specifically for these functional groups:

  • Production / Operations teams: New session-storage management and advanced incident-management features simplify system maintenance
  • Pre-production teams: Packaging multiple dynaTrace diagnostic sessions into a single file facilitates performance data collection and improves collaboration

4. Automated: The automation of manual tasks associated with traditional APM is a hallmark of third generation APM. This release extends dynaTrace’s advanced automation capabilities with:

  • Automated report generation capabilities that can be programmatically extracted for inclusion in continuous integration and test management environments
  • New hotspot visualization capabilities that streamline the process of diagnosing the root cause of performance bottlenecks

5. Integrated / Open: Third generation APM systems must easily integrate with the IT infrastructure that enterprises have already invested in. dynaTrace now supports:

  • Open source database: PostgreSQL is now an option for customers who wish to store data collected by dynaTrace for longer-term trending and capacity planning analysis
  • Open APIs for automated access to reports in various formats such as XML, HTML, PDF and CSV

“This latest release of the dynaTrace Continuous APM system delivers a host of capabilities that extend the core capabilities that distinguish our third-generation approach to application performance management,” said Bernd Greifeneder, CTO and co-founder of dynaTrace. “We’re fortunate to have so many deeply engaged customers who rely on our software and share their feedback with us, and I’m confident that they and the rest of the market will be able to do more with less using this release.”
